Classes are part of the Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) curriculum and this is a Foundation Specialty class.

Santa Ana Police Department is offering a Vehicle Theft for Patrol / Traffic Officers Class:

Monday, March 17th and Tuesday, March 18th, 2003          0800 - 1700 hrs
Monday, September 29th and Tuesday, September 30, 2003  0800 - 1700 hrs

The class will be held at the Santa Ana PD Training Facility, Santa Ana
The class is sixteen hours in length and is P.O.S.T. certified.

The class is designed to give the in-field officer a better understanding of methods used by thieves and to be able to better recognize VIN switched vehicles. Four hours of the class are practical application time at a local tow yard.

The Los Angeles Police Department will be presenting the 5-day Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) Vehicle Theft Investigation Course for police investigators/detectives.  The course will be presented at the Automobile Club of Southern California in Gardena, and the General Motors Training Center located in Burbank.  The course is certified under POST Plan III, tuition reimbursement.  The tuition is $208 per student.  Investigative personnel interested in attending the course should contact the Course Administrator, Detective Chris Figueroa, at telephone number (213) 485-2676.

The California Highway Patrol will be presenting several sessions of their Vehicle Theft Investigation Course in 2003.  The purpose of these training courses is to impart operational knowledge and guidelines for activities relating to the investigation of vehicle theft.

The course consists of 40 hours of training certified by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) as part of their Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI), and the $251 tuition is reimbursable under POST Plan III.

The first training course date and location will be:

The WSATI Northwest Chapter will be putting on a 40 hour Auto Theft Training Class on May 5th through May 9th, 2003 at the Bothell Police Department, 18410 101st Avenue NE, Bothell, WA 98011.

The tuition is $250.00 per applicant. For two or more applicants from one agency, the tuition is $200.00 per applicant.  The Western States Auto Theft Investigators Northwest Chapter is a not for profit organization with the federal identification number of 23-7456030.

The course contains training on all aspects of identification from counterfeiting to clone and chop shop investigations.  Upon completion of the course, each student will receive a Vehicle Theft Investigators Manual, NICB Manual and Training Certificate.

Instructors for the class will come from the National Insurance Crime Bureau and from the Western States Auto Theft Investigators.

Vehicle Inspection and Analysis for Repair and Insurance Fraud       June 6, 2003
Law 888.7 (.8 unit) 

This course provides a detailed examination of how to conduct a vehicle inspection for a suspected repair or insurance fraud. Topics include vehicle identification and construction, inspection procedures, equipment, lamp filament analysis, identification or implications of prior damage, staged accidents, reference data, witness marks, damage impact analysis and VIN swapping or cloning. In addition to reviewing data from actual fraud cases, participants will conduct a mock vehicle inspection and analysis for suspected fraud.
