The Orange
County Sheriffs Department is offering a Vehicle Theft for Patrol /
Traffic Officers Class:
The sixteen hour P.O.S.T. certified class is designed to give the in-field officer a better understanding of methods used by thieves and to be able to better recognize VIN switched vehicles. Four hours of the class are practical application time at a local tow yard. The class will be held at the OCSD Katella Training

The Los Angeles Police Department
will be presenting the 5-day Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI)
Vehicle
Theft Investigation Course for police investigators/detectives.
The instruction for this course is provided primarily by personnel assigned
to Commercial Crimes Division, Commercial Auto Theft Section. The
modules of instruction include subjects such as Vehicle Identification;
Chop Shops; Insurance Fraud; Motorcycle Theft Investigations and Organized
Thefts. The course is certified under POST Plan III, tuition reimbursement.
The tuition is $208 per student. POST Control Number: 1850-30190
The Los
Angeles Police Department is offering a 4-day Institute of Criminal Investigation
(ICI) Burglary Theft Investigation Course for police investigators/detectives.
The instruction for this four-day course is provided primarily by personnel
assigned to Commercial Crimes Division, Burglary Special Section.
The modules of instruction include subjects such as Crimes Scenes related
to burglaries; Transient Crimes; Pawnshop Procedures; Computer Thefts and
Organized Theft Groups. The course is certified under POST Plan III,
tuition reimbursement. The tuition is $350 per student. POST

The Los Angeles Police Department
is offering ten-day Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) Core Course
for police investigators/detectives. The Los Angeles Police Department,
in cooperation with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standard
and Training (POST), is one of six agencies presenting the ICI Core Course.
Students must complete this course in order to earn an ICI certificate.
This course is designed to provide investigators with the proper tools
to meet the new challenges in criminal investigation. The Core Course
curriculum includes Case Management and Documentation; Sources of Information;
Managing the Crime Scene; Recognizing, Identifying and Handling Evidence;
Crime Scene Reconstruction; Managing Informants; Interview and Interrogation;
Search and Arrest Warrants; Cognitive Interview; Working with Victims and
Witnesses; Surveillance Techniques; and Case Presentation. Specially
trained instructors who are experts in their field teach this two-week
course. The instructors use experience based learning to present
the subject matter. This modern method of instruction ensures that
the participants are actively involved in problem solving exercises.
Students recover physical evidence; conduct interviews and interrogations;
and participate in surveillance exercises. Ten Department vehicles
are needed for this course for a one-day surveillance exercise. To
successfully complete the Core Course, each student's case report and search
warrant must meet the filing criteria of the District Attorney's office.
This course requires outside preparation (homework) to pass the course.
There is no tuition for POST reimbursable agencies, for non reimbursable
agencies the tuition is $1,437.27 for ICI Core Nos. 49 and 50. The
tuition amount increases to $1,466.03 for ICI Core Nos. 51 and 52 due to
the new fiscal year rates. POST Control Number: 1850-26000
The Los Angeles Police Department
is offering a 5-day Homicide Investigation Course for police investigators/detectives.
The instruction for this course is provided primarily by personnel assigned
to Robbery Homicide Division. This five-day course include subjects
such as crime scene management related to Homicides; Serial Murders; Arson
Homicides and Dental Bite Mark Evidence. The course is certified
under POST Plan III, tuition reimbursement. The tuition is $250 per

Highway Patrol will be presenting several sessions of their Vehicle
Theft Investigation Course in 2008. The purpose of these training
courses is to impart operational knowledge and guidelines for activities
relating to the investigation of vehicle theft.
The course consists of 40 hours of training certified by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) as part of their Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI), and the $251 tuition is reimbursable under POST Plan III. POST Control # 1270-30190
