JAMES M. "Jim" HAYES

UNITED STATES NAVY, IMPERIAL COUNTY SHERIFF'S,
BUENA PARK POLICE, OCATT

My first OCATT partner, current instructing partner, and long-time friend, Jim Hayes, passed away Tuesday morning, September 1, 2015, following a devastating injury in an accident on Thursday, August 27, 2015.  Jim was a Navy diver, among many job assignments, before being discharged and joining the Imperial County Sheriff's Department.  He decided to lateral to the Buena Park Police Department where he became a well respected Detective.  When OCATT began in June 1993, Jim was my first partner and the legend began.  One of our assignments was to instruct Patrol / Traffic Officers about what they may encounter as far as VIN switched cars was concerned.  We went from a ten-minute roll call presentation to the current advanced officer's POST certified 16 hour class.  I was just getting ready to begin the 2nd day of our scheduled class when I was notified that Jim had passed earlier in the morning.  Jim was very involved in OCATI and WSATI over the years.  We instructed at an IAATI Training Seminar and several WSATI Training Seminars.  We also had the opportunity to instruct out of state in Hawaii, Arizona, and Colorado.

This is a difficult day for so many of us who worked with and were friends with Jim.

My hearts goes out to all of you as well, Gary
