Phil then had the members in attendance do self introductions. It was great to see some faces that we haven't seen in quite awhile and also some very new faces attending for the first time. Phil then requested that Newport Beach Police/OCATT Sergeant Joe Thrasher come to the podium. Joe came up and spoke about the retirement of long time CHP/OCATT Sergeant Fritz Grimsley coming at the end of July. Joe then called Fritz to the podium to present an award from WSATI to Fritz. Fritz was given a standing ovation by the overflow crowd as he came to the podium. The award read, Presented to

Western States Auto Theft Investigators
Phil then introduced Orange County Sheriffs/OCATT Investigator Bud Hood. Bud gave a presentation on "Surveillance & Technology - A Digital Approach." Bud's presentation included a Powerpoint presentation as well as actual digital cameras, recorders, GPS tracking units, computers, and PDAs and how they can assist law enforcement and special investigation units in their investigations. Phil and Bud then spoke about the upcoming WSATI Training Seminar, hosted by the Southern Chapter, that will begin with registration on Tuesday, September 28th and continue through Friday, October 1st, 2004. Phil then announced that we were going to break tradition again and have the raffle before lunch. The raffle was held. Phil then asked if anyone had any nominations for the Bent Screwdriver Award. LAPD/CECATS Detective Bob Graybill immediately nominated one of his new partners, Keith Spencer. Bob explained that during the raffle, Keith was upset because none of his tickets were drawn as winners. Bob then pointed out that in order to win, you would have to put your tickets in the raffle barrel so they could be drawn. Bob then showed the set of Keith's tickets still attached, one side marked "Ticket", and the other side marked "Keep this Coupon." No one could top that. Phil announced that there would be no September 2004 Training Meeting / Luncheon due to the Annual WSATI Training Seminar taking place at the end of September. The next scheduled Training Meeting / Luncheon will take place on Thursday, November 18th, 2004. Lunch was then served. Once again the La Mision Restaurant provided an excellent Mexican buffet that everyone spoke very highly of. Following lunch, the meeting was adjourned. A working meeting of the WSATI Seminar Committee took place. |
