47th ANNUAL TRAINING SEMINAR
The 2019 WSATI Training Seminar was held at the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley Hotel in San Diego, California. The seminar was hosted by the WSATI Southern Chapter and the IAATI Western Regional Chapter.
The Seminar began with early registration taking place the afternoon of Sunday, October 13, 2019, and late registration taking place early on Monday morning, October 14, 2019. A big thank you to WSATI Southern Chapter Treasurer Joe Starbird, Legal Counsel Richard Knapp, and his Office Manager Cathy Longman, for the great job they did processing the pre-registrations prior to the Seminar. Joe and Associate Director Robbie Midzuno also processed the "walk-in" registrants at the Seminar. Joe handled all the bookkeeping for the Seminar as well in the confines of the Seminar office, out of sight of most of the attendees. Past President Gary Labb was busy modifying website information for the attendees as he was given updates in training times, locations, and instructors by the Training Committee (Past President Dennis Frias, Legal Counsel Richard Knapp, Past President Lou Koven, and Vice President Johnny Miyasaki). Associate Director Robbie Midzuno and Vice President Johnny Miyasaki, along with bartenders Kelsey and Justin, were busy preparing the hospitality room and setting things up for the Monday night event.
Most of the
attendees had the opportunity to see Geraldine
Jones-Joseph, Associate Director Melissa
Director Richard Spallinger, Ryan
Rasmussen, and College Credit / POST Credit representative Kim Collet at the
registration table. Associate
handled the "walk-in" name badges. If you
tickets, lunch tickets, or WSATIWear, you had the chance to

It takes a lot of people to put on a seminar the size of this one.
2019 Southern Chapter President Mick O'Neill (Hagerty SIU) presided over the opening ceremonies and welcomed the close to 370 attendees.
Mick explained to the attendees that IAATI WRC was co-hosting the seminar and as a result everyone who registered would be receiving one free year of membership (2020) in the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators.
The seminar opened on Monday morning with the California Highway Patrol Border Division Honor Guard presenting the colors while the attendees recited the Pledge of Allegience.
Mick then introduced San Diego County Sheriff's Department Chaplain Herb Smith who gave the invocation.
Mick then introduced San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit, who gave a brief welcoming address to the attendees.
that San Diego County District Attorney Summer
Stephan had a conflict and could not make it to the
opening ceremonies, but would join us at Wedenesday night's event.
Mick then introduced the Keynote Speaker, Hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty. Mr. Hagerty spoke about the current status of cars and driving in the United States. Of course the attendees got to enjoy some great photos and videos as well.
Mick also advised the attendees that the Officers and Seminar Committee Members would be wearing distinguishing shirts each day to make it easy for the attendees to find someone if help or assistance was needed.

Mick then went over information regarding the seminar training schedule and locations, raffle tickets, and scheduled seminar events.
Mick ended the opening ceremonies and invited all to take part in the training sessions that would immediately follow, beginning with a General Session presentation by Leo Bottary, well known speaker, author, professor. Leo spoke about the importance of workplace peers and relationships.
A lot of the credit for the success of the Seminar is due to the hard work of the 2019 WSATI Chapter Officers and the
