January 19, 2006 - The Old Spaghetti Factory - Riverside

The Old Spaghetti Factory hosted the January meeting

2005 WSATI Southern Chapter President Frank Graber (Fullerton Police Department [retired]) welcomed everyone to the Old Spaghetti Factory.

Frank then requested that Past President Dave Randolph (21st Century Insurance SIU) lead the members in the pledge of allegiance.

Frank then introduced the 2006 WSATI Southern Chapter President Steve Torres.  Frank presented Steve with his 2006 President name plate and Steve presented Frank with his 2005 Past President name plate.

Steve then introduced the 2006 Southern Chapter Officers who were in attendance:

Bud Hood, Vice President, Orange County Sheriffs / OCATT
Rick Greenwood, Secretary, Riverside Police
Jim Williams, Treasurer, Long Beach Police / TRAP
John Bartolone, Sergeant-At-Arms, DMV Investigations

Also introduced was Richard O. Knapp, Legal Counsel, Knapp & Spurlock, LLP, who was unable to attend the meeting.

Steve then introduced the Southern Chapter Past Presidents in attendance: Skip Davidson (1991), Ted Saraf (1992), Dennis Frias (1997), Dave Dempsey (1998), Gary Labb (2000), Bill Lovold (2001), and Dave Randolph (2003).

Steve then had the members in attendance do self introductions.  It was great to see the great turnout of people who traveled in from Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties.  Welcome to several new Investigators joining us, as well as several people we had not seen in awhile, including Dave Petrelli.

Steve then introduced Dave Petrelli, the President of the Western Regional Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI).  Dave spoke about the chapters function among the other IAATI chapters.  Dave invited those who were not IAATI members to think about joining.  For more information on IAATI go to www.iaati.org or on the WRC, go to www.wrciaati.org.

Steve then introduced the first guest speaker, Tom King, VP of Sales and Marketing, Satellite Security Systems.  Tom spoke about the company's products used by law enforcement for tracking vehicles and in bait car operations.  Tom can be reached at 760-822-0457 / tking@satsecurity.com.  Further information is available at www.satsecurity.com.

While the second guest speaker was setting up, Steve spoke about the recent recovery of a 1969 Corvette at the port, a 37 year old stolen vehicle.  Dennis Frias, who supervises the Foreign Export and Recovery team for the Highway Patrol, filled in details of the recovery.

Steve then called up the newest Past President, Frank Graber, to present him with a plaque thanking Frank for his contributions as President in 2005.

Steve then requested that Past President Gary Labb come to the podium.  Steve presented Gary with a plaque thanking Gary for his contributions to WSATI and wishing Gary well in retirement.  Gary retired from the Santa Ana Police Department on 12/30/05.

Steve then introduced the second guest speaker, Lee Knight, from Phantom Tracking.  Lee spoke about their new product, an anti-theft and crash detection system for motorcycles.  Lee can be reached at 800 592-0847 / lee@phantomtracking.com.  Further information is available at www.phantomtracking.com.

Following Lee's presentation, Steve found that lunch was not quite ready.  Steve and Bud then presided over the raffle.  And of course, Past President Dave Dempsey pulled the lucky winner's ticket for the TV / DVD combination.  Unfortunately the ticket did not belong to Dave.

Once the raffle was over, those in attendance enjoyed lunch and the chance to talk to their peers at their tables.

Following lunch, Steve announced the next meeting would be held at the Mercedes Benz Training Center on March 16, 2006 and most likely would have a Santa Maria style barbecue lunch.

Steve then adjourned the meeting.
