TRAINING MEETING / LUNCHEON
July 17, 2003 - La Mision Restaurant - Oceanside
|2003 President Dave Randolph
(21st Century Insurance SIU) started the meeting by welcoming everyone
to the La Mision Restaurant,
the newest venue for WSATI.
Dave then had Kelly Reynolds (Progressive Insurance SIU, former Coronado PD) lead all the members in the pledge of allegiance.
Dave then had the members in attendance do self introductions. It was nice to see two new faces from Santa Ana PD, Joe Weber and Dan Aguilar. There were some old (familiar faces) attending such as Fritz Grimsley, Pat Sheets, John Moore.
Dave then introduced the 2003 WSATI Southern Chapter Officers; Phil Macklin, Frank Graber, Steve Torres, Bud Hood, and Legal Counsel Richard Knapp. Dave then introduced the WSATI Southern Chapter Past Presidents in attendance; Dave Dempsey, Gary Labb, and Bill Lovold.
Dave then made note that Carol VanNatter (one of "the bricks" of WSATI) was absent due to her husband being ill. Dave wished to pass along WSATI's good wishes for a quick recovery.
Dave then thanked Pat Sheets (Alamo/National Rental Car Security) for all the work she did in finding the new venue for the San Diego area and all the fine door prizes that Pat was able to obtain. It should be noted that Bud Hood (OCATT / OCSD) also provided some great door prizes as well.
Dave then introduced the guest speaker, Orange County Deputy District Attorney Pete Pierce who is assigned as the in-house DDA for the Orange County Auto Theft Task Force (OCATT 714 634-1385). Pete gave a presentation on identity theft and how it applies to vehicle theft cases. His presentation was well received by those who attended the training. Dave presented Pete with a thank you gift.
Dave then introduced Bill Lovold, AAA of Southern California SIU (former LAPD BAD-CATS) who spoke about the upcoming International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI) Training Seminar. The seminar will be held on August 3rd to 8th, 2003 at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills. For further information regarding the seminar, go to the WSATI link, or to the IAATI link. If anyone would like to be a vendor or a sponsor at the seminar, please go to the vendor link for more information.
Dave then opened the floor for discussion. San Diego PD Detective Duane Pudgil (619 692-4831) presented the attendees with a tool he has seen in the possession of two different auto theft suspects. Duane said that neither suspect made it clear how it was to be used. Duane was attempting to see if anyone had any ideas about the tool.
The members were then invited to partake in a Mexican buffet luncheon provided by the La Mision Restaurant.
Dave then asked for any nominations for the Bent Screwdriver Award. No one had any nominations. Dave (the past winner) will have to hold onto the award for another two months.
The raffle was then held. There was some controversy as several of the members managed to draw their own tickets, but alas, the Bent Screwdriver Award had already been put to rest...
Dave recognized Pat Sheets one more time for her work in obtaining the venue for WSATI and providing raffle prizes for the attendees.
The meeting was adjourned.
