TRAINING MEETING / LUNCHEON
July 19, 2007 - The Toyota USA Automobile Museum -
2007 WSATI Southern Chapter President Bud Hood (OCSD/OCATT Retired) welcomed everyone to the newest WSATI meeting venue, the Toyota USA Automobile Museum. Bud thanked Toyota Financial Services/Lexus Financial Services Fraud Supervisor Tony Ko for making the arrangements.
Bud then requested that Past President Gary Labb (Santa Ana Police/OCATT Retired) lead the members in the pledge of allegiance.
Bud then introduced the 2007 Southern Chapter Officers who were in attendance:
Vice President, Riverside Police
Steve Torres, Immediate Past President, DMV Investigations [retired] was introduced, but not present.
Bud then introduced the Southern Chapter Past Presidents in attendance: Skip Davidson (1991), Ted Saraf (1992), Gary Labb (2000), Bill Lovold (2001), and Lou Koven (2002).
Bud then spoke about the 2007 WSATI Training Seminar taking place in San Diego in September 2007. He then advised the attendees that immediately following the Southern Chapter meeting would be a Seminar Committee meeting if anyone wished to attend.
Bud then requested that WSATI Past President Gary Labb (and current IAATI Western Regional Chapter President) speak about the upcoming IAATI Training Seminar in Phoenix in August. He asked those interested in attending to please go to the IAATI webpage, iaati.org, to get complete information on the seminar. Gary also said that IAATI International was working cooperatively with WSATI and anyone who registered to attend the WSATI Seminar would receive a one year membership in IAATI.
Bud then had the members in attendance do self introductions. It was great to see the great turnout of people who traveled in from Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties. Welcome to all the new Investigators joining us, including John Fletcher (LAPD BADCATS), Andy Aguayo (LAPD BADCATS), and Gustavo Guzman (San Diego RATT), as well as several people we had not seen in awhile, Chip Morin (Progressive SIU) Lisa Wrobel (San Diego RATT), John Jiacoma (San Diego RATT), Mike Perez (LAPD BADCATS), and Luke Magee (LAPD BADCATS).
Bud then spoke about the great "networking opportunities" available at both the WSATI and IAATI Seminars. He also spoke about the member lists available for both.
Bud then introduced the guest speaker, Pat Wills (Long Beach Fire Department Arson). Pat's presentation covered the crimes of reported vehicle theft, insurance fraud, and arson... all committed in one case covering numerous vehicles. This was a sophisticated scam involving new car purchasers, a new car salesman, and friends who "got rid of the cars" that no one could pay for any longer, so after the insurance payoff they could return and buy or lease new vehicles from the salesman. No wonder he was the "salesman of the year..."
Bud then asked attendees if they had anything they'd like to share with the others. Vic Johnston, LoJack Law Enforcement Liaison spoke about the co-operation he was receiving south of the border with the Mexican LoJack officials. He spoke of two recent cases, one in Tijuana, and one in Guadalajara, where US vehicles equipped with U.S. based LoJack equipment were stolen in Mexico. When reported to Vic, he was able to get the LoJack activated and supplied the Mexican LoJack officials with the information to put into their system. He said the vehicles were then recovered in a few hours.
Bud then announced that the available classes for the WSATI Training Seminar were now posted on the WSATI webpage for potential attendees to see. Click here for the class schedule.
Bud Hood presided over the WSATI raffle.
Bud Hood announced that the next meeting would be on November 15, 2007 at the General Motors Training Center in Burbank.
Bud also advised that new WSATI Southern Chapter T-shirts were available with the new Southern Chapter Logo.
Bud then announced that lunch was ready and invited those attending to get in line to get their Mexican Tostada buffet lunch. Attendees then had the opportunity to "network" during their lunches.
The meeting was adjourned.
After the meeting, people interested in helping put together the 2007 WSATI Training Seminar got together to discuss committees and what was needed. Attending the meeting were Bud Hood, John Bartolone, Rick Greenwood, Jim Williams, Martha Jones-Joseph, Geri Gary, Dave Petrelli, Vic Johnston, Richard Knapp, and Gary Labb. We are seeking more people to be involved in all aspects of the Seminar. Some of the committees are Training and Educational Committee; Publicity, Marketing, and Public Relations Committee; Finance Committee; Exhibits Committee; Registration Committee; and Local Entertainment, Amusement, Sightseeing, and Companion Program Committee. If someone wants to help put together a golf tournament in conjunction with the Seminar, we would like to have you involved. All these committees can use additional people. If you have an interest, please contact Bud. The next scheduled Seminar planning meeting will be on Thursday, August 16, 2007, at AAA in Costa Mesa.
