TRAINING MEETING / LUNCHEON
July 18, 2013 - Bloomfield Park Community Center -
2013 WSATI Southern Chapter Vice President Tim Jackson (AAA Southern California SIU) welcomed everyone to the meeting and to the newest Southern Chapter venue, Bloomfield Park Community Center in Lakewood. Tim advised everyone that 2013 WSATI Southern Chapter President Rob Manning (LASD) was unable to attend the meeting due to prior family commitments. Tim then requested Keith Jackson (KBJ Consulting, no relation) lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
Tim thanked those in the room who attended the 2013 WSATI Training Seminar hosted by the Southern Chapter. Tim suggested that as many people as possible attend the upcoming 2014 WSATI Training Seminar hosted by the Central Chapter and 2015 WSATI Training Seminar hosted by the Northern Chapter.
Tim showed three of the newly designed WSATIWear shirts and one hat that were available at the seminar. He said they were now available for purchase.
Tim introduced the other Southern Chapter Officers who were in attendance:
Powell (DMV Investigations)
President Rob Manning (LASD) and Sergeant-At-Arms Shawn Robison (Wawanesa Insurance) could not attend the meeting.
Tim then introduced Past WSATI Southern Chapter Presidents who were in attendance:
Skip Davidson (1991), Ted Saraf (1992), Gary Labb (2000), Bill Lovold (2001), Jim Williams (2009), John Bartolone (2010), and Tim Glover (2012).
While the speaker was still setting up equipment, Tim asked if anyone had any announcements.
2009 Southern Chapter Past President Jim Williams (Long Beach PD - Retired) spoke about the presentation of the Southern Chapter's Billy Osborn Memorial Award at the 2013 Training Seminar. He introduced the recipient, Mike Bender (ICW Group Insurance Companies SIU).
Jim then spoke about the Covina Woman's Club putting on the "Pot O' Gold" charity golf tournament on March, 17 2014, to raise money to protect women in the community. The Covina Woman's Club has been one of our Training Meeting venues for many years.
Keith Jackson (KBJ Consulting) spoke briefly about the upcoming IAATI 61st Annual Training Seminar taking place September 29 through October 4, 2013 in Rimini, Italy.
2000 Southern Chapter Past President Gary Labb (Santa Ana PD / OCATT - Retired) spoke about the upcoming AATIA Training Seminar taking place September 9-12, 2013 in Laughlin, NV. He advised the attendees of a problem AATIA had with the post office returning registration forms instead of delivering them to AATIA. Due to this, the "early bird" registration will continue until August 15th.
Tim then introduced the Guest Speaker, DMV Granada Hills Supervising Investigator Randy Vera. Randy gave a presentation on the latest information on "Electronic Odometer Rollbacks." There re lots of new tools being used. Randy's presentation covered some of the cases he is involved with. Randy's presentation was well received by the meeting attendees. This was an eye-opener to most in attendance.
Tim requested that the attendees do self introductions to assist with possible networking. He also requested that any attendees bring up cases of interest to the group.
WSATI 2000 Past President / Current Webmaster Gary Labb (Santa Ana PD / OCATT - Retired) advised the attendees of the importance of filling in the sign-in forms as they are transferred to the online encrypted roster on the website. Gary then had Heather Roberts give the attendees the password to access the encrypted roster. Gary said that the roster was a great networking tool. Gary also spoke about the WSATI Classic Cars page on the WSATI website, asking the attendees to look at the almost 295 classic cars currently listed.
Several other attendees spoke about cases that will not be discussed in the minutes. It was good to have so many of the attendees share information with the other attendees.
Due to Rob being unavailable, the usual collection of WSATI shirts were not at the meeting. To see some of the available shirts, please go to WSATIWear. Please contact Rob Manning at his listed email address for current pricing on the shirts.
Some folks from AAA (who will remain unnamed) misunderstood that Tim was going to hold the raffle before lunch, with Tim was going to do the raffle after lunch. After everyone went out the door to get in line for their Santa Maria Barbecue Style lunch, Tim decided to hold the raffle after lunch.
While the training was taking place, the Santa Maria Barbecue Style lunch was being prepared by 2010 Past President John Bartolone (DMV Investigations), Mike Elenitsky (LAPD / LoJack - Retired), and 2012 Past President Tim Glover (LASD/TRAP). Everyone helped themselves to the tri-tip, chicken, salad, potato salad, beans, rolls, and cookies. Everyone appeared to enjoy and some took a trip back for seconds.... A big thank you to John, Mike, and Tim for preparing the lunch in the heat of the day.
Following luncheon, the raffle was conducted by Tim Jackson.
Following the raffle, the meeting was adjourned by Tim Jackson. The next meeting will be on Thursday, September 19, 2013.
There were some new faces that came to the meeting as well as several "old" members who had not been to the meetings in some time. This meeting drew people from as far as Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino County. It was nice to see an officer I worked with many years ago on a special detail when he was at CHP Santa Ana, Brian Lee, now back as the OCATT Lieutenant. Thank you all for your attendance.
