March 21, 2002 - Mercedes Benz Training Center, Rancho Cucamonga

2002 President Lou Koven (LAPD BAD CATS) started the meeting by welcoming everyone to the Mercedes Training Facility.  He thanked Mercedes Benz Technical Training Supervisor Ray Fausel for allowing us to use the facility for our training meeting.  Visit the Mercedes Benz website at www.mbusa.com.

Lou then had Orange County Sheriffs Department Investigator Bud Hood lead all the members in the pledge of allegiance.

Lou then introduced the 2002 WSATI Southern Chapter Officers, as well as current members of the Board of Directors, as well as Past Presidents attending.

All in attendance then introduced themselves to the other members.

Lou then introduced Ed Soo Hoo from SecureStar.  Ed gave a presentation on the new GPS based tracking device that is now on the market.  This system allows the user to inquire about their vehicle's status using either a cellular phone or from a secured internet website.  For more about SecureStar, go to their webpage at http://www.securestar.com/ or contact Michael Morris at 714 394-1057.  A SecureStar tracking system was given away as a door prize by Ed and Michael.  The initial winner, an employee of a competing company, donated it back so it could be raffled again, with Bud Hood winning the system.

Lou then introduced Judd Rousseau, Manager of the Fraud Victim Assistance Department at TransUnion.  Judd spoke about the identity theft that is occurring, how to prevent it, and how to spot it.  The victim hotline number is 800 680-7289.

We were treated to some great Santa Maria barbecued tri-tip and chicken (and all the fixin's).  The lunch was provided by the Santa Maria Barbecue Co. (3845 Jasmine Avenue, Culver City, 310 559-5709)

After lunch, Lou then introduced a special speaker, retired LASD Sergeant Walter Bouman.  Walter, though he modestly denies it, is an expert in terrorism, both domestic and foreign.  Walter gave a presentation on terrorism, as well as speaking about upcoming training provided by P.O.S.T. and the Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI).  Walter can be reached at 909 944-0726.

There is no doubt that the training provided at this meeting made for a session crammed with information in a short period of time.  Many of the attendees made comments on both the quality and the quantity of the training provided at this meeting.

Lou then asked for any nominations for the Bent Screwdriver Award.   There were no nominations.  This means that the past winner, Lou, gets to hold onto the award for another two months.

The raffle was then held.

The meeting was adjourned.
