TRAINING MEETING / LUNCHEON

March 15, 2012 - Covina Woman's Club - Covina

2012 WSATI Southern Chapter President Tim Glover (LASD / TRAP) welcomed everyone to the meeting and to the Covina Woman's Club.  Tim asked everyone to join him in the pledge of allegiance.

Tim then requested that the attendees go around the room and do self-introductions.  It was good to see attendees who came from as far away as San Diego, Thousand Oaks, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Redlands.

Tim then opened the floor for attendees to discuss cases, etc.  WSATI / IAATI WRC Past President Rick Greenwood, the current IAATI 3rd Vice President, spoke about the upcoming IAATI Training Seminar August 19-24, 2012 in Kansas City.  He also spoke about the upcoming WSATI Training Seminar hosted by the Northern Chapter, October 2-5, 2012, in Lake Tahoe.  Rick said that the annual IAATI WRC General Meeting and Elections would take place at the WSATI Training Seminar

WSATI Associate Director Heather Roberts (Infinity Insurance) spoke about AAA Raceway's Drag Strip being closed down and the increase in street racing taking place since the drag strip was closed.  She said that there have been at least three street racing deaths in the past few weeks.  Tim said that he recently had ten of his detectives working on some street racers, stopping about 100 of them and impounding 20 of the vehicles.  He said that if anyone neeeded help with the street racing problem in L.A. County to contact him.

WSATI Past President Ted Saraf (LoJack) spoke about the upcoming Good-Guys Classic Car Show coming up in Del Mar on March 29-April 1.  Ted said that with the increase in classic car thefts, LoJack was offering LoJack for Classics at a reduced price.

WSATI / IAATI WRC Past President Gary Labb (WSATI Webmaster) spoke about the increase in Classic Car thefts, with 183 now being posted on the WSATI website's Stolen Classic Cars page.  He requested that the attendees who go to classic car shows please check the website, that some of the vehicles that have been stolen may have been VIN switched and are still being displayed at shows, unknown to their new owners.  Gary also gave the attendees the password for the online encrypted Southern Chapter roster.

NICB Agent Mark Winter spoke about a NICB warning that was going out to insurance companies.

Tim then introduced the first guest speaker, Tony Ko, Toyota / Lexus Financial Fraud Unit, who spoke about how the Sovereign Citizen Movement was impacting vehicle finance fraud.  Tony then introduced the second guest speaker, Investigator Dave Yokley, CHP ISU, who spoke about the cases he was working involving the Sovereign Citizen Movement.

Prior to the raffle, Tim had Mick O'Neill, OneBeacon / Hagerty Insurance, come up to the podium to speak about the May 17, 2012 WSATI meeting.  Mick said that Hagerty Insurance, along with WSATI, will be presenting Classic Car training.  He said that Hagerty is trying to determine the top 10 stolen Classic Cars in Southern California and then they will bring in the top ten cars, along with subject matter experts for those vehicles, to give training.  Mick said the meeting will be held at Carroll Shelby Enterprises in Gardena.  He said that all the information would be forthcoming on the WSATI website.  He said it appeared the start time might be moved up to 9 am rather than the usual 10 am and that the training might be extended until 2:30 or 3:00 pm.  Mick requested that people check for updates on the WSATI website.  He said if anyone had any questions, to contact him or WSATI Sergeant-At-Arms Brian Yori (LAPD/TRAP).

Tim said that the raffle would be held during lunch, and requested the attendees to please form a line for the Italian style luncheon provided by the ladies of the Woman's Club.  Tim then presided over the raffle, assisted by WSATI Southern Chapter Secretary Tim Jackson, Southern Chapter Treasurer Aristeed Powell, and Victor Valdez (AAA of Southern California).  There were a lot of different winners, and at the same time many were upset with some of the repeat winners.  If you want to be like them, do what they do... buy extra raffle tickets... The attendees then had a chance to network with one another prior to, during, and after the meal service.

The meeting was adjourned following the luncheon.
