TRAINING MEETING / LUNCHEON
November 17, 2005 - General Motors Training Center - Burbank
2005 WSATI Southern Chapter Vice President Steve Torres (DMV Investigations [retired]) welcomed everyone to the General Motors Training Center, as President Frank Graber was ill.
Steve explained that due to traffic, he would take a few minutes to discuss the new raffle to allow late members to arrive.
Steve then requested that Past President Dave Dempsey (AAA Southern California SIU) lead the members in the pledge of allegiance.
Steve then introduced the other 2005 Southern Chapter Officers who were in attendance:
Secretary, Orange County Sheriffs / OCATT
Steve then had the members in attendance do self introductions. It was great to see the great turnout of people who traveled in from Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties. Welcome to several new Investigators joining us, as well as several people we had not seen in awhile, including Gary Christensen (West Covina Police).
Steve then introduced the Southern Chapter Past Presidents in attendance: Skip Davidson (1991), Ted Saraf (1992), Dave Dempsey (1998), Gary Labb (2000), Bill Lovold (2001), Dave Randolph (2003), and Phil Macklin (2004).
Steve then called the Construction Industry's Crime Prevention Program of Southern California's Executive Director Earl Gunnerson up to the podium. Earl was joined by the President of the CPP Board of Directors, Gabe Marquez. Earl then explained the "Hooter's Hummer" Award's background and the case that was conducted by the late CHP Inland Investigator John Hootman. Earl then explained the case that won the 2005 "Hooter's Hummer" Award. He then called Ventura County Sheriffs Deputies Michael Hartman and Juan Ponce to the podium where Gabe presented each of them with their winning plaques. CPP can be reached at 800 432-7257 X823 or http://www.crimepreventionprogram.com/.
Steve then introduced the guest speaker, Sam Massey of Progressive Insurance, a recognized expert in air bag fraud, theft, and safety. Sam gave a presentation indoors on the different scams that take place that involve air bags. Sam then concluded his presentation by taking the audience outdoors where he set off numerous steering wheel and passenger side air bags, allowing the audience to take in details that will assist in detecting fraud when looking at air bags. Sam can be reached at (310) 715-7113.
Following Sam's presentation, Ted Saraf, LoJack Law Enforcement Liaison, spoke to the attendees about some new LoJack products and planned updating of law enforcement equipment.
Steve announced that lunch was ready and invited those attending to get in line to get their bar-b-q and then to find seats at available tables.
The attendees were then served a Santa Maria style barbecue held just outside the auditorium. The Santa Maria Barbecue Company (a Lou Koven "find") catered the lunch and most everybody commented that it was the best lunch that WSATI has ever had. Barbecued tri-tip, chicken, baked beans, garlic bread, two salads and dessert were on the menu. If you went away hungry it's your own fault! Hopefully we will have them back again soon (possibly March). They can be located in Culver City. Call them at 310 559-5709.
Following lunch, Bud Hood presided over the WSATI raffle. Earl Gunnerson presided over the CPP raffle.
Following the raffle, Steve said that a nomination had been forwarded to the Chapter Officers to nominate DMV Investigator John Bartolone as the 2006 Southern Chapter Sergeant-At-Arms. Steve asked if there were any other nominations from the members in attendance. Steve asked if there were any seconds to the nomination. Past President Dave Dempsey seconded John's nomination. It will be up to the current Chapter Officers to determine if John will fill the position. Steve then advised the members that the rest of the Chapter Officers will move up one position in 2006.
Steve announced that the next meeting would be on January 19, 2006.
The meeting was adjourned.
