WESTERN STATES AUTO THEFT
INVESTIGATORS ASSOCIATION
SOUTHERN CHAPTER
TRAINING MEETING / LUNCHEON

November 15, 2007 - General Motors Training Center - Burbank

2007 WSATI Southern Chapter President Bud Hood (OCSD/OCATT Retired) welcomed everyone to the General Motors Training Center.

Bud then requested that Past President Gary Labb (Santa Ana Police/OCATT Retired) lead the members in the pledge of allegiance.

Bud then introduced the 2007 Southern Chapter Officers who were in attendance:

Rick Greenwood, Vice President, Riverside Police
John Bartolone, Treasurer, DMV Investigations
Dave Petrelli, Sergeant-at-Arms, Farmers Insurance
Richard O. Knapp, Legal Counsel, Knapp & Spurlock, LLP
Steve Torres, Immediate Past President, DMV Investigations [retired]

Jim Williams, Secretary, Long Beach Police was introduced, but not present.

Bud then introduced the Southern Chapter Past Presidents in attendance: Bill Robertson (1988), Skip Davidson (1991), Dave Dempsey (1998), Randy Ballin (1999), Gary Labb (2000), and Steve Torres (2006).

Bud then spoke about the 2007 WSATI Training Seminar that took place in San Diego in September 2007.  Bud said that the Seminar was a success.

Bud then had the members in attendance do self introductions.  It was great to see the great turnout of people who traveled in from Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties.  Welcome to all the new Investigators joining us, including Chris Loomis (Safeway Insurance), Shane Sindle (Burbank Police), Felipe Chee (DMV), Eduardo Madrid (DMV), Kevin Hendricksen (DMV), Phuong Pham (Westminster Police), as well as several people we had not seen in awhile, Randy Ballin (CHP Retired), Bill Robertson (NICB), Colette Poitras (State Farm), Bob Hart (Ward Investigations), Steve Torres (DMV Retired).

Bud then introduced the guest speaker, Deputy District Attorney Terry White (L.A. TRAP/L.A. County DA).  Terry's presentation covered the legal information on such topics as vehicle theft, chop shops, business inspections, and confidentiality.

Bud then introduced Executive Director Earl Gunnerson of the Crime Prevention Program of Southern California who made the presentation of the 12th Annual "Hooter's Hummer Award," with the assistance of CPP Director Gabe Marquez.  Earl presented the award to a very surprised (and red faced) Mike Perez, LAPD BADCATS.  Everyone was amazed that his partners kept it a secret.

Bud then announced that the lunch was ready.  The attendees were then served a Santa Maria style barbecue held just outside the auditorium.  The Santa Maria Barbecue Company (a Lou Koven "find") catered the lunch.  Barbecued tri-tip, chicken, baked beans, garlic bread, two salads and dessert were on the menu.  If you went away hungry it's your own fault!  They can be located in Culver City.  Call them at 310 559-5709.

Following lunch Bud Hood presided over the WSATI raffle, which this year was combined with some of the scale model construction equipment provided by the Crime Prevention Program.

Bud asked if there were any nominations for the 2008 WSATI Southern Chapter Sergeant-at-Arms.  TRAP/LASD Sergeant Tim Glover was nominated and seconded.  An advisory vote was taken by the members in attendance.

Bud Hood announced that the next meeting would be on January 17, 2008 at a location to be determined.
