November 20, 2008 - Toyota Museum of Industry and Technology - Torrance

2008 WSATI Southern Chapter President Rick Greenwood (Riverside Police) welcomed everyone to the Toyota Museum of Industry and Technology, and introduced himself as the 2008 Southern Chapter President.

Rick then requested that 1993 WSATI Past President/2003 IAATI WRC Past President Marianne Finney (State Farm Insurance SIU - Retired) lead the attendees in the pledge of allegiance.

Rick then asked everyone in the room to introduce themselves to the others in attendance.  After the self introductions, Rick told the many new attendees that it was good to see such a great turnout for the meeting and that WSATI was known for having the ability to "network" people with each other.

Rick told the attendees that the Chapter maintained an online roster and an email mailing list.

Rick then spoke about WSATI, in co-operation with the IAATI Western Regional Chapter, posting an encrypted roster on the WSATI website that contains contact information for WSATI Chapters, AATIA, CATI, BCATTI, and Alberta ATIA.  This will give us available contact information for all the vehicle theft associations within the jurisdiction of the IAATI Western Regional Chapter.  This is now up and operating.  It can be located in the link to the IAATI WRC.  Each contributing association president was given the encryption password and can supply it to their own association membership.  WSATI Southern Chapter members need to contact Rick for the password.

Rick announced that in 2009, the IAATI Western Regional Chapter would be co-hosting the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI) Annual Training Seminar in Denver, Colorado with the Colorado Auto Theft Investigators (CATI).  The information should soon be posted on the IAATI website.

Rick then asked if anyone had anything they'd like to discuss with the other attendees.

Rick then introduced 2006 IAATI Western Regional Chapter Past President and current IAATI Associate Director Dave Petrelli.  Dave said that the Directors of IAATI had awarded Marianne Finney with the 2008 IAATI Directors Award and requested that Marianne come up to the podium where Dave presented her with the award.

While Marianne was still standing at the podium, Rick Greenwood requested that she remain there as he also had an award to present to her.  Rick explained that Marianne was the first recipient of the Billy Osborn Memorial Award, recognizing her for her contributions to the Chapter in 1993.  Rick said that during the fire storms of October 2007, both he and Marianne were evacuated from their homes, with Rick's home surviving the fires, however Marianne's home was destroyed by the fires.  She also lost the Billy Osborn Memorial Award in the fire which she held close to her heart as she had worked closely with Billy Osborn.  Rick then presented Marianne with a replacement copy of her original Billy Osborn Memorial Award.  Marianne was very thankful for this replacement.

Rick then requested that Dave Petrelli return to the podium.  Rick then introduced Dave as the guest speaker.  Dave, Regional Manager of PT & C Forensic Consulting, then began his program on Fire/Arson Investigation.

At the completion of Dave's presentation, Rick then requested Ron Poll, Executive Director of the Crime Prevention Program (CPP) of Southern California, come up to the podium.  Ron explained that he wished to present the "Hooter's Hummer" Award but first he wished CHP FEAR Sergeant Dennis Frias to come up and give a background on the Award and the person it was named for, CHP Inland Division ISU Investigator John Hootman.  Dennis explained the case and gave some background on John and why the award was so named.

Ron then said that CPP also wished to present a Special Recognition Award, as well as the "Hooter's Hummer" Award.  Ron requested that CHP/SANCATT Investigator Heath Kuhlmann come up to the podium.  CPP Director Gabe Marquez then presented the Special Recognition Award to Heath for his investigation of a construction theft case that also led to solving a homicide.

Ron then requested that the CHP Inland Division ISU Team come up to the front of the audience to receive the "Hooter's Hummer" AwardThe award was then presented to the team by CPP Director Gabe Marquez.  CHP Inland Commander Joe Flores came up to the podium to also recognize and to thank the team.

Ron then held a raffle of the construction equipment models that CPP brought to the meeting.  Three lucky winners walked up with the scale models.

Rick then requested that Toyota/Lexus Financial Services Fraud Administrator Tony Ko come up to the podium.  Tony thanked all in attendance for assisting Toyota/Lexus with the recovery of vehicles.  Tony said that Toyota/Lexus enjoyed working hand in hand with law enforcement and that Toyota/Lexus wished to recognize some officers.  Tony then requested that Toyota/Lexus Financial Services National Manager Pete Carey and Toyota/Lexus Financial Services Vice President Mike Wells come up to the podium.  Mike spoke about the co-operation of law enforcement and the millions of dollars in recoveries that officers had made of Toyota and Lexus vehicles.  He said that he wished to recognize three officers with Toyota Distinguished Service Awards.

Mike then requested that LASD/TRAP Detective Renaye Harrison come up to the podium where she was presented with a Toyota Distinguished Service Award.  Mike then said that the second recipient, LASD/ TRAP Dective Rob Manning was not present.  Mike then presented the Toyota Distinguished Service Award to LASD/TRAP Sergeant Tim Glover who noted that Rob was currently in court on a case.  Mike then requested the third recipient, CHP FEAR Sergeant Dennis Frias come up to the podium where Mike presented him with a Toyota Distinguished Service Award.

WSATI Southern Chapter President Rick Greenwood then presided over the raffle.  There were a lot of different winners, and at the same time many were upset with some of the repeat winners.  If you want to be like them, do what they do... buy extra raffle tickets...

Rick then announced that the lunch was ready.  While the meeting was going on, 2007 WSATI Southern Chapter Past President Bud Hood (OCSD/OCATT Retired) had been preparing the Santa Maria style BBQ lunch.  The attendees were then served a BBQ buffet, which everyone appeared to enjoy and take a trip back for seconds (and for some, thirds)...Tri-tip, chicken, hot links, salad, potato salad, beans, and a cookie...good job Bud...
