TRAINING MEETING / LUNCHEON
November 18, 2010 - Carroll Shelby Enterprises - Gardena
2010 WSATI Southern Chapter President John Bartolone (DMV Investigations) welcomed everyone to the meeting and the newest WSATI Southern Chapter venue, Carroll Shelby Enterprises. The meeting attendees had the opportunity to see a lot of great vehicles prior to, during, and after the meeting.
John requested that Lou Koven (Crime Prevention Program for the Construction Industry) lead the group in the pledge of allegiance.
John began by having all in attendance do self introductions.
John advised that the WSATI Southern Chapter was seeking candidates for the position of 2011 Sergeant-At-Arms and requested nominations from the attendees. Brian Yori (LAPD/TRAP) and Aristeed Powell (DMV Investigations - Artesia) were nominated. John said the current WSATI Officers will meet and determine the 2011 Officers following the Training Meeting.
John introduced Investigator Lou Koven and Executive Director Ron Poll from the Crime Prevention Program for the Construction Industry. Ron explained the annual "Hooter's Hummer" Award. It is named after the late California Highway Patrol Investigator John D. Hootman of the Inland Division Investigations Services Unit. It honors the memory of an officer who gave so much time, effort, enthusiasm, and innovation towards helping the construction industry prevent and resolve equipment crimes. The 2010 recipients were the Riverside Auto Theft Interdiction Detail (RAID) Team. Ron presented Riverside PD/RAID Detective Matt Lewis with the plaque and the "Perpetual Helmet" trophy.
John then introduced guest speaker Brian Yori (LAPD/TRAP), who in turn introduced the others that were assisting in the presentation, Dave Evans (Shelby Enterprises), Ron Rice (Shelby Enterprises), and Mark Winter (NICB). They spoke regarding the identification and investigation of Shelby clones. They did a great "round robin" of having the attendees break into four groups and rotate through four areas of training, the newer Shelby Mustangs (Dave), the older Shelby Mustangs (Brian), the Shelby Cobras (Mark), and the engines (Ron).
The Carroll Shelby Foundation sold some great Shelby Products during the training meeting.
Prior to lunch, WSATI Southern Chapter Sergeant-at-Arms Tim Jackson (AAA Southern California) conducted the raffle. There were a lot of great raffle prizes. Rob Manning (LASD/TRAP) and Tim Glover (LASD/TRAP) assisted Tim with the raffle. Again, it appeared that those who bought extra raffle tickets did the best. Some of the raffle prizes included WSATI Southern Chapter shirts. To see some of the available shirts, please go to WSATIWear. Please contact Rob at his listed email address for current pricing on the shirts. WSATI would like to thank Carroll Shelby for donating some raffle prizes that were used as the "Grand Prizes," including a die-cast Shelby Mustang, autographed by Carroll Shelby...way to go Mark Winter...
At the conclusion of the raffle, a Santa Maria Style BBQ luncheon was served for those who stayed for lunch. It included Tri-tip, chicken, sausage, salad, potato salad, beans, and a cookie to top it all off...everyone appeared to enjoy and some took a trip back for seconds...
Following lunch, Dave Evans (Shelby Enterprises and Carroll Shelby's personal mechanic) took down the tape around Carroll Shelby's personal car collection and invited everyone to take a close look at the vehicles that were not seen earlier as part of the training program. Anyone want to talk about the 400 hp 1982 Shelby Dodge Omni?
WSATI would like to personally thank Carroll Shelby, Carroll Shelby Enterprises, and the Carroll Shelby Foundation for hosting this training meeting, providing the training, and bringing in extra vehicles from Nevada to assist in the training.
Following the lunch, the meeting was adjourned by John Bartolone. The next meeting will be on Thursday, January 20, 2011.
There were a lot of new faces that came to the meeting as well as several "old" members who had not been to the meetings in some time. This meeting drew people from as far as Ventura, San Diego, and Riverside.
Other 2010 WSATI Southern Chapter Officers in attendance were:
